Create one network local

Why set up a LAN?

When you have multiple computers, it may be convenient to connect them together to create a local area network (LAN in English, short for Local Area Network). The establishment of such a network is very expensive, contrary to what one might think.

Here are some benefits that will bring you the establishment of a local network:

* File transfer;
* Sharing of resources (sharing the internet connection, printer sharing, shared disks, etc.).
* Mobility (in the case of a wireless network);
* Discussion (mainly when the computers are remote);
* Network play.

Both types of LANs

There are two main types of local network architecture:

* Wired networks based on Ethernet technology, representing almost all local networks. Since Ethernet networks typically use RJ45 cables, often referred to as RJ45 networks;
* Wireless networks, typically using WiFi technology.

Materials needed

To create a LAN RJ45 on Windows, you must:

* Many Windows computers (computers running two different versions of Windows may be in the same network);
* Ethernet cards on PCI or ISA (with an RJ45) or integrated into the motherboard. Check if the LEDs on the back of the NIC light up when the computer is powered on and a cable is plugged in! There are also network adapters on USB port, especially in the case of wireless network adapters;
* RJ45 cables, in the case of wired networks;
* A hub (also called a hub), in which case it is possible to connect the RJ45 cable from different computers on the network, the price is quite low (approximately 50 €), or switch (switch) or so Alternatively a crossover cable if you wish to connect only two computers.

Network architecture

To create a LAN RJ45, it is recommended to adopt a so-called “star” in which computers are connected to each hub (hub or collector) via an RJ45 cable. A hub is a box load to route data from one computer to another. The choice of hub will therefore be based on the number of computers connected in order to have enough shots (called “ports”) on it.

In the case of a large network in terms of size or bandwidth requirements, a switch (switch) replace advantageously the hub (hub), as it allows to broadcast packets to computers affected, while the hub systematically sends packets to all connected computers.

If you want to connect only two computers, it is possible to do without hub, connecting two computers directly with an RJ45 crossover cable.
Architectures to avoid

The following network structures will not work, even if they seem to be correct at first sight, unless the computers have multiple network interfaces (multiple cards) and the cables between two computers are used for crossover cables
